/WOMEN'S RUGBY COMMUNITY Managing
"My BABY & Me" is a special feature that weaves stories on the theme of "childcare and work" through interviews with senior moms and dads.
Vol. 10 welcomed former Japan national team member Suzuki, who led the development of Japanese women's rugby. After retiring, Suzuki, who has been involved in the management of women's rugby teams as a "club advisor" and is also active in promoting women's rugby, is currently working as a sole proprietor and raising a one-year-old girl. I was impressed by his attitude of opening up a new role model to balance a second career for athletes with child-rearing.
How old is your child now?
I'm only one year old now (editor's note: as of December 2024). It's like walking around, falling, and laughing. She's a girl, but she's extremely naughty.
He retired in 2023, but did he get married after his retirement? Or was he married with an eye on retirement?
It's after retirement. I was just thinking about making the 2021 World Cup a break from my career as a player. After I turned 30, my desire to have children has been growing stronger, but my hormonal balance has been disrupted due to the multiple concussions, so my husband said he should try to get pregnant early... and at the time he was still a partner. So the trend came to me, "If I retire after the World Cup, I'll get married and try to get pregnant."
I didn't know that concussions affect hormonal balance.
Damage to the brain can cause hormonal balance to be disrupted. Cognitive functions have also deteriorated. I often took medication due to aftereffects such as headaches, so I thought it was important to retire and regain my health first. Fortunately, I've gotten much better now and I've got a child soon.
What kind of work do you currently work?
I do a variety of things, including promoting women's rugby, managing the community, club advisors for sports teams, sales around sponsors, and commentary. I work 2-3 days a week, and the rest mainly work from home. My children are still young, so rather than working hard full-time, I prioritize my time with my family and choose jobs that I can do.
He is involved in a variety of activities, but is he probably a sole proprietor?
I agree. As a sole proprietor, I work with contracts with companies and club teams.
What kind of job is being a club advisor?
This position is to consider the "overall design of club management" including team direction, coach selection, and player education. For example, it plays a role in connecting the field's opinions with management, such as how to take foreign players and how to provide career support to players.
That's the position.
Fortunately, we were able to establish a new position like that.
As I am from Yokohama, I was quickly approached by the club team I currently belong to after retirement (editor's note: the women's rugby team "YOKOHAMA TKM"), but when I was thinking about my life stage, I couldn't find a position that fits within the existing framework.
Therefore, when we consulted with the club with the management office we belong to, we were able to establish a new position based on examples from other clubs.
I have a great understanding of the club, including how I work.
I think it would be a great help to the team that former national team players will be involved. It would be great for retired players to be able to achieve such a success in the future.
Yes, that's right. I think there's a need to become such a model. As an athlete, I continue to think about what I can do now, what I can give back to society, and what my value is, and I hope I can become a role model by sharing the following things: "This is how I work," and I hope to become a role model.
Regarding housework and childcare, which are inseparable from working styles, what is the division of your husband?
My husband can do anything. I'm better at housework and childcare than I do (lol). My husband works as a trainer for a sports team, and even though there's a meeting at 7am, the laundry is hanging out at 5am. I think you've been given a lot of cooperation. Thank you very much.
That's amazing. Since your husband also works in sports, I think it's safe to say that your child is a thoroughbred, but can you see another glimpse of it?
Ah, but I get quite athletic. I'm naughty now. Yes and yes and it was fast too. When I take her to work, everyone who sees her is like, "Ha!" (laughs)
I think it's a situation where you can work on site and desk work, but what does it feel like building your physical strength?
Recently, I've been getting busy with more work, so I've been losing a lot of opportunities to go to the gym. I think I need to get into a more routine. I'd like to do coaching someday, so I'd like to have a body that is enough to do demos.
Next, we will be offering a traditional project where we show off our memorable items with our children, but is it a pair of underwear?
I'm leaving the hospital. I chose a natural look rather than a frizzy one. When I took photos for the one-month or two-month anniversary, I dressed them up to the very last minute (lol)
Please let us know if you have any thoughts on raising your children while working.
That means "I don't do everything 100% perfect." During his active career, he tried to do 120%, but he ended up suffering from knee and head injuries, and paid various costs. I'm a really perfectionist, so I think I don't go this far, but as I raise my children, I find myself having to relax a bit and think, "It's OK to do it decently."
If you're perfectionist, do you feel stressed about being "pretty"? It's something I don't understand, even though it's just a bit sloppy (lol)
At first it felt strange. I've always set goals for everything, so I felt disgusted that I thought, "That's enough." However, just by having a child's physical condition, your plans can change completely, and unless you accept that, it won't last.
People who become top athletes have a different mindset.
I no longer realize that I am perfect, but now I think about how good it would be if my life and our own lives were rich.
Your child is a girl, right? Are you thinking of doing women's rugby in the future?
I don't know if it's rugby or not, but I would like to have it played sports. There's a tennis court nearby, so there's talk of asking them to play tennis or something. It's still a while (lol).
